Correlation between the honey yield and some morphological features of honey bees (Apis Mellifera L.), as used in the Hungarian practice

The practice of using morphological features to distinguish the races of honey bee was worked out abroad. In Hungary it is used for choosing the colonies suitable for further breeding and for selecting possible hybrids of native A. m. carnica and A. m. ligustica. During our examination the author tried to determine whether the cubital index (CI) and the colour examination taken together can be used in forecasting honey yield, estimating the breeding value, and selecting possible hybrids with A. m. ligustica. The author also examined the relationship between the morphological features and acacia honey yield. The comparison was made between seven races, hybrids, and Hungarian ecotypes. The value of the CI in the different groups (A. m. carnica and A. m. ligustica, imported from Canada x A. m. carnica R3 hybrids) was similar. The graphically displayer CI values showed a one peak curve. Therefore, the races and hybrids cannot be distinguished with certainly using this method. The relationship between the honey yield and the four colour types of the workers (r=0.139, r=0.095, r=0.066, r=0.102), and the value of the CI (r=0.255), was not significant. There was no relationship between the colour of the workers and the CI. The data showed that it is necessary to look for other morphological features to achieve successful selection work
