The role of double-purpose cattle in producing good-class products

In Hungary the composition of the cattle stock according to breeds and purpose types has radically changed during the last decades. Numerous new breeds were imported by different reasons and, needless to say, there was s shift in interest towards the new specialized breeds. As for the present role and future of the double-purpose Hungarian spotted cattle, which used to be dominant earlier, opinions are rather contradicting. According to extreme views the role of this breed is coming to an end and, similarly to the Hungarian grey cattle, it would be expedient to care for its conservation as a kind of gene reserve. On the other hand, other specialists are speaking about the renaissance of the breed under the changed conditions. In order to come to a professionally substantiated viewpoint, the author sums up knowledge of the Hungarian spotted cattle, including the international judgement of the breed and recent experience concerning its breeding. He states that the mountain spotted cattle breed group still plays an important role in the shaping of a cattle breed structure adapted to ecological conditions in the region of the Alps and in the countries of Central Europe where excellent roughages are grown in the field. The breed cannot miss in quality beef cattle production either. The author thinks that the poor technical and technological equipment and management on small farms is the greatest problem of keeping the Hungarian spotted cattle and therefore makes numerous recommendations to change the situation in this field
