Possibilities of feeding cereal grains rich in non-stop-polysaccharides (barley, oat) with poultry species

The authors investigated the effect of feeding cereals of barley and oat in broiler chicken and table duck experiments. It was found that the barley and/or oat supplementation of 20 to 45 percent decreased the feed utilization and growth rate intensity during the starter and grower phases in both poultry species investigated, even in the case of using isocaloric and iso-nitrogenous diets. The FCR was the more sensitive indicator of the anti-nutritive effect of barley and oat than of growth depression. The growth depression which was found during the young period of age followed by compensatory growth in all cases. The abdominal fat pad increased in barley fed animals, but the oat feeding did not cause such an effect. The undesirable effects of barley and/or oat feeding, which were found in the present study, were possibly caused by the non-starch-polysaccharide (NSP) content of the feed. This can be decreased using such special enzyme preparates which decompose partly the compounds mentioned above and can therefore decrease their anti-nutritive effects
