1996
El-Musri, Kh. | Al-Arabi, Z. (Jordan Univ., Amman (Jordan). Dept. of Nutrition and Food Technology, Faculty of Agriculture)
The feasibility of nutrition intervention programme for the recovery of a group of malnourished children ( age 9-16 months ) was evaluated. The programme was based on the use of planned meals from the local food resources combined with nutrition education of mothers as an alternative solution for expensive imported food formulas. The study gives evidence that the use of socioeconomical, nutritional, biochemical and anthropometrical indicators are valid estimators for growth monitoring, and for programme evaluation in the catch-up growth period. The study suggested that the use of nutrition intervention, including the education of mothers on how to plan balanced meals for underweight children from the local resources is practicable for communities with low socioeconomical and nutritional status as an alternative solution for medical therapy and imported expensive formulas.
