Noise effect on feed intake, digestibility, and performance of broiler chickens [Research Note]

The objective of this study was to examine the effects of two levels of noise on feed intake, nutrient digestabilities and performance of broiler chickens. A power generator was used as a major source of noise. Intensity of noise was determined using a sonometer, and values of 83 dB and 64 dB were obtained in two poultry houses located at distance of 30 and 200 meters from the generator, respectively. From each poultry, 20 broiler chickens were selected randomly and fed a typical starter diet for a period of 5 weeks. Thereafter, a digestibility experiment was conducted over a period of 14 days to determine digestibilities of the basic nutrients contained in the experimental diet. The high noise reduced feed intake and weight gain, but had a little effect on digestibilities of most nutrients. The digestibility of ether extract, however, was reduced under the high noise condition and hence contributed to the low performance.
