Varietal differences of growth in direct-seeded rice [Oryza sativa]

This experiment was carried out to evaluate the varietal differences of growth in direct-seeded rice in1994 and 1995. (1) the emergence rate of japonica varieties was higher than that of indica varieties. (2) The heading date occurred 0 to 8 days earlier in transplanted rice than in direct-seeded rice, when the direct seeding date preceded by 7 or 8 days the transplanting date. Varietal differences were revealed in the number of days between the heading date in each cultivation method. (3) The number of days for growth in the field was longer in direct-seeded rice than in transplanted rice. The difference was derived from the number of days from direct seeding or transplanting to heading. (4) The number of panicles increased in direct-seeded rice and the ratio of main culm was greater in direct-seeded rice than that in transplanted rice. There were varietal differences in the ratio of main culm which were due to the varietal differences in the number of panicles. (5) As for the varietal differences in lodging tolerance, the Japanese varieties showed a lower lodging tolerance than the varieties from USA. Then the varieties with a lower number of panicles or late maturing varieties showed a higher lodging tolerance
