Genetic and phenotypic correlations for carcass traits in the base and current populations of Japanese Black cattle were estimated using multiple-trait restricted maximum likelihood (REML) method. Field records of 4,099 steers obtained from 1988 to 1991 were used. Carcass traits considered in this study were carcass weight, rib eye area, rib thickness, subcutaneous fat thickness and beef marbling standard number (BMS), In the base population, animals born before 1960 were assumed to be unrelated and no inbred. On the other hand, in the current population, sire and dam of fattened cattle wee regarded as the base animals. Genetic correlations between carcass weight, and rib eye area and rib thickness in base population were moderate with positive, while the correlation between subcutaneous fat thickness and BMS was low. Genetic correlation in the current population between BMS, and carcass weight and subcutaneous fat thickness were 0.052 and 0.085, respectively. It is suggested that improvements of both carcass weight and BMS under appropriate level of subcutaneous fat thickness are possible in Japanese Black cattle
