This experiment was carried out to evaluate the varietal differences of yield performance in direct-seeded rice in 1994 and 1995. (1) the number of panicles increased while the number of grains per panicles decreased in direct seeded rice, in spite of the similarity in the number of grains per square-meter. On the other hand, ripening ratio, weight of 1000 grains and ripening grade decreased in direct-seeded rice. The yield of direct-seeded rice in most of the varieties decreased in comparison to that in transplanted rice. (2) Yield was highly correlated with the number of grains per square-meter, but the difference of yield between the cultivation methods wad determined by the relative change in the ripening grade to the change in the number of grains. (3) Chugoku 113 showed an increase in the yield of direct-seeded rice each year. Based on the characteristics of yield performance, it is suggested that this cultivar shows a superior ripening ability in the main culm in comparison with other culm, although further investigations should be carried out
