Nutritional status of nitrogen in relation to soil fertility, and nitrogen applied with organic and liquid fertilizer in forcing strawberry [Fragaria ananassa]

The effect of soil fertility and applied nitrogen (N) with organic and liquid fertilizer on the long term nitrogen nutrition was determined in forcing strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa Duch. cv. Nyoho), in three commercial greenhouses those have been applied different amount of organic substances. Although plant N concentration increased rapidly with the application of organic fertilizer, the N concentration increased remarkably after covering with PVC film without the application. Although the leaf chlorophyll content measured with handy chlorophyll meter was significantly related to the leaf total-N and nitrate-N, the measurement of chlorophyll should not be a reliable method of the determination for the plant nutritional level. When the nitrate-N concentration of petiole was 0.2% dw, the total-N concentration of leaf blade was estimated to be around 3.0% dw. And when the nitrate-N was higher than 0.1% and total-N was low, the total-N increased thereafter. From these results, we can conclude that the forcing strawberry plants can be grown without basal application of organic fertilizer and with supplying liquid fertilizer throughout the growing period. At that time, the nitrate-N in the petiole should be an reliable index and kept to be around 0.2% dw (400 ppm in the sap)
