Root sprout and seedling dynamics of Prunus ssiori in an Abies mariesii forest in oku-Nikko, Kanto district [Japan]

We studied the dynamics of root sprout origin and seed origin juveniles of Prunus ssiori in an Abies mariesii forest in Oku-Nikko, Kanto district. We counted the number of juveniles and measured the height growth and dispersion pattern from 1988 to 1991. Seed origin juveniles of P. ssiori had not become established in the forest, since about 70 to 80% of them had died one year after germination. Three years later, only 3% of seed origin juveniles had survived. In contrast, about 80% of sprout origin juveniles had survived one year after sprouting. Many sprout origin juveniles continued growth on the forest floor beyond four years. Moreover root sprout origin juveniles had a higher growth rate during the first year. The dispersion pattern of root sprout origin juveniles was contagious, since they surrounded their mother trees and sprouting occurred to a small extent on the roots of root sprout origin juveniles. We found that root sprout origin juveniles may be supported by the mother trees and have a growth advantage after a disturbance in a forest
