Breeding of a sugar beet [Beta vulgaris] cultivar "Mighty" and its agronomic characteristics

The sugar beet cultivar, "Mighty", was developed by the Hokkaido National Agricultural Experiment Station, Sapporo, Japan. This cultivar was registered and released by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Japan in 1994. In breeding of sugar beet high sugar content, high quality and high root yield have great aims. "Mighty" is a three way cross hybrid, bred from a cross made between a cytoplasmic male sterile monogerm seed parent F1 line, "NK-183BR x NK-219", and a multigerm pollen parent line, "NK-218BR". Root yield of "Mighty" and sugar yield of it are considerably high, and they are higher than "Monohomare", "Mighty" has slightly high sugar content and good juice purity, Bolting resistance of "Mighty" is high, and is similar to "Monohomare". Resistances to Cercospora leaf spot and high soil humidity are slightly low, and are similar to "Monohomare". Seed productivity is good. "Might" is expected to be cultivated in all area of Hokkaido
