[The mucocilliar clearance mechanism of respiratory passages, its functioning and physiological importance]
1998
Harmeyer, J. (Tieraerztliche Hochschule Hannover (Germany). Physiologisches Inst.)
The research deals with the physiological clearance of trachea, bronchia and bronchiales in horses. Beside noxious gases the air may contain mechanical pollutants, e.g. dust particles of different sizes and chemical composition. These mechanical particles are discharged from the respiratory passages together with mucilage by means of the mucocilliar clearance mechanism. During the investigations in vitro the role of ciliated epithelium of the respiratory passages in the clearance process has been established. The process of the clearance mechanism has been recorded in a video-film.
