[Lactose content in milk before and after milking]

The given research was carried out with the aim to study the dynamics of lactose content in milk during milk removal. The content of lactose, fat and protein as well as the cell count were determined in milk samples taken from left-side quarters of 8 Latvian Brown cows. Twelve of sixteen quarters had somatic cell count below 100 000 cells in a mili-liter of milk and were considered healthy. Lactose content was measured by infra-red light spectometry in milk samples taken just before applying the milking unit (sample 1) and an hour after milking (sample 2). After comparing the samples it was obvious that sample 2 had a lower lactose content than sample 1 of the same quarter. All the lactose values were mathematically transformed to lactose content in fat-free milk. After transformation there was no significant difference between samples 1 and 2.
