Maintenance breeding is the most important and difficult step for maintaining purity and high yield ability of a variety. The main method used for maintenance breeding is selection. As field trial was arranged during 1995-1997 in LLU Research and Training farm "Vecauce" to detect the best and simply usable criteria of selection for maintenance breeding of the barley variety "Klinta". The article presents only the criteria of the 1st and 2nd year progeny testing nurseries. Analysed are: (1) measured quantitative traits: field germination, productive tillering, stem height, number of stem internodes, length of spike, kernels per spike, density of spike, yield per line, kernel size, 1000 kernel weight (Tables 1, 2, 3), and (2) phenological observations: uniformity of phenological phases among lines, uniformity of reaction to diseases and lodging, phenotype of lines (Table 4). Conclusion is made that the main criterion is the adequacy to variety phenotype observed during vegetative period.
