1997
Bekers, M. (University of Latvia, Riga (Latvia). Inst. of Microbiology and Biotechnology)
In the given article a survey of food industry development in Latvia from the 14th century up to nowadays is presented as well as the scientific research in that sphere is analysed. Future prospects of food industry developments under the present market conditions are discussed. Due to intensive import of food products from abroad new ways and forms of food industry development are sought. It is suggested to manufacture non-food products on the basis of agricultural raw materials. A prospective branch of food industry could be the production of biochemical polymers from starch and grain, biofuel (biodiesel) from rape seeds, biogas - from wastes. It is stated that biofuel production system integrated with agriculture will ensure sustainable development of all the regions in Latvia. Realization of the idea depends on the taxation policy in Latvia.
