Viability of planting teak and sentang in Malaysia

Forest plantations or man-made forests are becoming increasingly important in supplying forest products throughout the world. Some of the successful stories of forest plantations in Asia Pacific Regions are the forest plantations of Pinus radiata in New Zeaand and Australia, Araucaria in Australia and Papua New Guinea, Teak in Thailand and Indonesia and Acacia mangium in Malaysia and Indonesia. While the planting of Acacia on a commercial scale had been instituted since 1962, the concept of planting teak (Tectona grandis) and sentang (Azadirachta excelsa) in Malaysia on a plantation basis for commecial timber production is relatively new and the awareness was created over the last four to five years. A number of agencies and smallholders have already started investing into plantation of both these species. This paper aims to highlight some of the features and properties of both species, their suitability for growth in Malaysia and the financial return on their investment.
