Production and quality of berseem clover (Trifolium alexandrinum L.) for dairy cattle in the north and central regions of Mexico | [Produccion y calidad de trebol de egipto (Trifolium alexandrinum L.) para ganado lechero en el norte y centro de Mexico]

The objective was to determine the production potential and quality of irrigated berseem clover (Trifolium alexandrinum L.) as a winter forage crop for dairy cattle production at the north and central regions of Mexico. Experiments were conducted at Matamoros, Coahuila; and Pabellon, Aguascalientes. Seven cultivars of berseem clover were evaluated for dry matter accumulation (DM). Berseem clover was compared to ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) and oat (Avena sativa L.) in monoculture and in association for DM. Results from this study suggest that berseem clover has a high potential to produce quality forage to sustain intensive milk production in the north and central regions of Mexico during the winter

El objetivo fue determinar el potencial productivo y el valor nutritivo del trebol de Egipto (Trifolium alexandrinum L.) con riego, como forraje de invierno para ganado lechero en el norte y centro de Mexico. Los experimentos fueron conducidos en Matamoros, Coahuila; y Pabellon, Aguascalientes. Se evaluo la acumulacion de materia seca (MS) de siete variedades de trebol de Egipto. El trebol de Egipto se comparo para MS con mezclas con zacate ballico anual (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) y avena (Avena sativa L.) en monocultivo y asociado. Los resultados de este trabajo sugieren que el trebol de Egipto tiene un alto potencial productivo y de valor nutritivo para mantener la produccion intensiva de leche en el norte y centro de Mexico durante el invierno
