[Root distribution and regeneration of Hawthorn (Crataegus pubescens (H.B.K.) Steud)] | Distribucion y dinamica de regeneracion radical de tejocote (Crataegus pubescens (H.B.K.) Steud) bajo las condiciones edaficas de Chapingo, Edo. de Mexico

English. Field studies were conducted of root distribution, root regeneration (number of roots) and growth (length), using the method of profile. The soil was sandy loam limited by "tepetate". The climate is C (Wo) (W)G(i')g type. Twelve trees, each with two profiles (N-S) were used, with 0-30, 31-40, 41-50, 51-60 and 61-80 cm in depth. The growth and root regeneration depend upon the available soil water. The depth of rooting was limited by the presence of "tepetate" layer. The roots regenerated and were growing during the dry period while the trees were free of leaves (XII-III). In May, the number of newly regenerated roots was superior (149%), as compared to the roots found at the time of profile digging (100%). Root growth was manifested in the number of roots and longitudinal increase of newly formed roots. The implications of the facts found are discussed

Se estudio, por el metodo del perfil, la distribucion y crecimiento de raices de Crataegus en el suelo de un huerto, con textura migajon-arenoso, limitado por un estrato cementado (tepetate). El clima es C (Wo) (W)G(i')g. Se utilizaron 12 arboles en los cuales se realizaron dos perfiles por arbol (N-S) ubicando cinco capas: 0-30, 31-40, 41-50, 51-60 y 61-80 cm de profundidad. Se observo el mayor crecimiento en el largo de raices en los arboles ubicados en suelos de 0-80 cm de profundidad. El numero de raices latelares fue mayor en 0-50 cm, para estas variables no se observaron efectos de los arboles. La profundidad de enraizamiento fue limitada por presencia de tepetate. Las raices se regeneraban y crecieron en la temporada seca y en la epoca de defoliacion de los arboles
