Understanding the languages of the crop: towards damage relations for stemborers and why farmers should not plant late

Farmers fields and computer simulation studies were conducted to investigate the impact of late planting on stemborer infestation, growth and yield responses of rice. Data on deadhearts, white heads, leaf area, leaf nitrogen content, dry matter weights, yield and yield components were collected from five fields planted early and five fields planted late in Munoz, Nueva Ecija, Philippines. The stemborer (SBORERO) model was used to estimate yield increase if farmers plant early, and yield decrease if the stemborer infestation rates increased in late planted fields. The number of whiteheads was greater in late planted fields. Grain yield of early planted rice was higher than late planted rice. Computer simulations showed a higher yield of 9-20 percent in early planted rice due to a reduction in stemborer infestation. A decrease in yield was shown if stemborer levels were assumed to be two to three times greater in the late planted fields. By convincing farmers in the area on the importance of early planting, this preventive measure can help save the cost of stemborer control
