Sustainable production of selected vegetables in lahar affected areas of Pampanga and Tarlac [Philippines]

This study was conducted in Pampanga Agricultural College [Magalang, Pampanga, Philippines] Crop Science Department from January 1994 to December 1994 to determine the performance and profitability of bush sitao and hot pepper production on lahar applied with organic fertilizers containing beneficial microorganisms. Study 1 aimed to determine changes in soil properties as affected by the application of organic fertilizer containing different beneficial organisms on lahar-based media. The effect of media on bush sitao were manifested in the differences in height of plants, number of pods developed, length of pods and weight of pods produced. The effect of fertilizer to bush sitao showed that only the length of pods was found significantly different. The pods produced from plants applied with organic fertilizer with mycorrhiza (BOF1) produced significantly longer pods over all other plants treated with other fertilizers. Results obtained show that the tallest plants at 30 days was observed from inorganic fertilizer treated plants and the shortest was from the plants treated with organic fertilizer with azotobacter (BOF2). No significant differences were found among media used. The number of fruits was not significantly different due to fertilizer treatments, however, significant differences were observed among media used. The weight of fruits was found significantly different due to media. In terms of yielded significant differences were also observed among media. Soil as a growing media was found significantly superior overall other media as manifested by the highest yield and return on investment. Soil pH, organic matter, phosphorus and potassium content varied with the kind of media and fertilizer applied. The microbial population was improved with the addition of fertilizer and ameliorants
