Some genetic and economic principles to conserve the Philippine native pigs
1998
Bondoc, O.L. | Ramos, S.M.
The genetic and economic principles of conserving native pigs in the Philippines for possible long-term use in production and for future economic benefits are discussed, including proposed storage methods (i.e. maintaining live animals versus frozen semen/embryos) and biotechnologies in pig reproduction and conservation. Based on simple economic evaluation, benefits from genetic conservation and improvement of the Philippine native pig may exceed costs on a national scale. The costs of the conservation activities should include the propagation within a small population, cryopreservation of sperm and embryo, intercrossing with exotic breeds, monitoring of their growth, reproduction, and living habits, and long-term genetic improvement of economic traits
