Milk yields during the first four lactation and lactation lengths of 273 Murraha and 233 Grade Murrahs from the Ridiyagama state farm were analyzed, the grade Murrahs being developed by and up-grading program initiated in 1948. The year effect was a significant source of variation (P0.01) for milk yields in all lactations while season was significant for the first three lactation (P0.05) the milk yields during the yala season (summer) being higher than yields in Maha (winter). The differences in milk production between season were in general more pronounced for Murrah than for grade Murrah. The Murrah was superior to grade Murrah in milk production by 241 kg across all lactation.
