Collection and evaluation of strains/clones and varieties of tea in the Philippines

Chinese tea (var. Bohea), Assam tea (var. Assamica), and Mountain tea (native) were collected in the highlands of Benguet and Mountain Province [Philippines] with elevations of 1,700 m to 2,060 meters above sea level. Rooted cuttings of Assam tea were acquired from Japan. The study evaluated the adaptability and growth performance of the tea varieties in the highlands. Assam and Chinese tea varieties with both 100 percent survival outperformed the Mountain tea (native) with 20 percent survival. Both varieties could withstand the clay loam to sandy loam soil of the Baguio National Crop Research and Development Center (study site) with pH of 5-5.8, 19.0 deg C temperature, 75.96 percent average annual relative humidity and an annual rainfall of 1,226.31 mm
