Design and fabrication of a solid waste incinerator

A pilot scale municipal solid waste (MSW) in incinerator was designed and fabricated to study the burning characteristics of heterogenous MSW. A fixed bed, downdraft reactor with a 0.10 sq.m. bed area was employed. Trial runs were conducted using mixed sawdust, rice hull, coffee bean hull, coir fiber, paper, plastics, dry and freshly cut grasses and tree leaves with moisture content up to 25 percent. Combustion was maintained from 14 to 16 kg/hr and temperature between 500-800 deg C. However, bridging of fuel occurred at the throat of the reactor, requiring constant fuel agitation to promote continuous downflow on the bed, Waste heat from the flue gas after the cyclone dust separator could still be recovered for heat energy utilization with proper insulation on the incinerator's outer wall. Flue gas temperature were still high, ranging from 22 deg C up to 280 deg C even with excessive heat loss from the walls
