Promising pili cultivars in the Bicol Region [Philippines]

Pili production in the Bicol Region [Philippines] has remained low because most of the existing trees have not been rigidly selected from high-yielding mother trees and because no adequate cultural management was employed. Pili varieties/strains were evaluated as sources of scions for asexual propagation and multiplication. Findings showed that nine pili cultivars were found promising based on weight of whole fruit, kernel, and shell thickness. These included Penafrancia 3, Penafrancia 5, Binogsacan 2, Masarawag 3, Tabiguian 1, Tabiguain 3, Tabiguian 4, Bololo, and Malipo. All cultivars had spreading growth habit, compact, and with rigid branches reaching about 7.25 to 8.84 m. Penafrancia 5 was the tallest, while Bololo was the shortest. On the average, the cultivars started to bear fruit 7 to 8 years after planting, except for Binogsacan 2 which started to bear on the 9th year. Production started as early as March and peaked on July-October. Binogsacan 2 had the highest yield of 26.51 kg whole fruit and kernel weight of 2.12 kg.
