Pit configuration and depth of heat source for direct-type copra dryer
1997
Sudaria, E.E. | Piedraverde, R.V. (Visayas State Coll. of Agriculture, Baybay, Leyte (Philippines))
Findings showed that square pit configuration performs better than the parabolic and rectangular. In terms of depth of heat source, 1.8 m was better than other depths, including that of the farmer's dryer at 1.67 m. The combination of square pit configuration and heat source depth of 1.8 m had the best drying performance with 8.7 hours drying time and fuel consumption of 567 husks. Drying rate was 31.1 kg/hour and the drying rate per unit fuel consumption is 0.14 kg/kg-hour. The 1,000 nuts dried require only 8.7 hours to bring the moisture content down to 12 percent (wet basis). The heat distribution on the drying platform was more or less equal. The copra produced was of better quality compared with copra dried in other pit configuration and depths of heat source
