Geographic definition of risk area for maize production in West Africa: A socio-economic perspective
1997
Manyong, V.M. | Oyewole, B.
Data on five major pests for maize were collected in the maize-growing area of nine countries in West Africa. GIS software was used to identify physical and socio-economic factors that favour the build- up and economic incidence of pests on maize production. Differences in the length of the growing period, the relative endowment on capital, family labour and the intensity of land use were found to be critical factors for the economic incidence of pests, Elevation and soil factors did not show any large effects. Implications for technology development and targeting are discussed.
