Five winter wheat cultivars with different levels of resistance to low temperature, (Odesskain 51-very resistant, Fundulea 4- and Lovrin 34 resistant, Iulia-medium resistant and Libellula susceptible) and two spring cultivars (Fundulea 4 Vrn and Lovrin 34 Vrn) has been used to compare if the effect of the exogenous treatment with ABA on the freezing tolerance is the same with the effect of natural and artificial hardening. Data obtained regarding the free proline content, stability of cell membranes and resistance to low temperatures of cultivars mentioned above in all three treatment was in high concordance. The high significant coefficients of correlation between free proline content of plants and 50 percent of lethal temperature (TL50) in the ABA treatment the same parameters in the artificial and natural hardening, suggested the possibility to use in the screening for winter hardiness of wheat breeding material, ABA treatment as a rapid method for this purpose.
