The paper includes four chapters dealing with the broached subject. The first chapter briefly presents the soil resources taking into account the criteria concerning soil taxonomy, puroposes and uses. Out of the about 9.4 million ha arable land, only 4 million ha meet the conditions required for the developement of a sustainable agriculture. The second chapter presents the methodology of soil integrated monitoring system in Romania, and the achivements ob tained in this regard, with special view to the elements of level l (16x16 km grid, including 940 sites, applied indicators, measurement periodicity), and some obtained results, including the ones obtained within some more profund investigation (level II) of the monitoring works. The main restrictions of agricultural soil condition are: frequent drought (7.1 million ha), waterlogging (3.8 million ha), water erosion (7.1 million ha), landslide (0.7 million ha), salinisation (0.6 million ha), secondary compaction (6.5 million ha), low organic matter contend (7.2 million ha), strong and moderate acidity (3.4 million ha), low to very low mobile phosphorus and potassium content (6.9 million ha), low nitrogen content (4.8 million ha), industrial chemical pollution (0.9 million ha). The last two chapters are dealing with the general measures for ecological reconstruction of agricultural and forest soils and the needs to accomplish the integrated monitoring of the environmental factors in Romania.
