Effect of storage on the chemical constituents of volatile oils of Cymbopogon proximus [Sudan]
1996
Abbas, R.K.
The two Cymbopogon samples used in the study were brought from different area of Sudan, Abuhamad area in the Nothern state and Sinkat area in the Red Sea State. The volatile oils from the two samples were extracted by steam distillation, the oil content of each plant was determined before and after storage was ten months. The oil samples were subjected to intensive physical, chemical and spectroscopic analysis before and after storage. The physical properties of the oil samples. Such as relative density ; refractive index ; odours and specific optical rotaion were determined. The chemical properties : acid value ; ester value ; saponification value, iodine value and ketone value were studied. In order to know the chemical compounds that constitute each oil sample, chromatographic separation techniques were used. The gas chromatography was also supported by spectroscopic techniques such as mass spectroscopy indicates the presence of more than sixteen components in each sample. The storage had an affected on the amount of the volatile oils of Cymbopogon proximus more than chemical constituents
