Performance of various cultivars of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) at Nagichot [Southern Sudan]

The potential of wheat production in the rain-fed highlands of Nagichot, Southern Sudan, was determined by evaluating the performance of seven Kenyan bread wheat genotypes, planted in a randomized complete block design with four replications. The genotypes performed satisfactorily and differed significantly for grain yield, plant height,tillering capacity, and days to flowering and maturity. The grain yield ranged from 1716 to 3100 kg/ha for the various genotypes in 1980. The genotype Mbweha gave the highest yield of 3.1 t/ha mainly due to largest number of tillers per meter and the shortest plant height. slight sporadic and nonsignificant attack of aphids and topborer was noticed on all expermental crop. The mean yields obtained at Nagichot were slightly better than the national average of 1.7 t/ha. The trial was quite successful and the genotypic performance indicated a good potential of economical wheat production in the rain-fed areas of southern Sudan
