1992

The promising and efficient fodder plant Silphium perfoliatum L. from the Asteraceae family was grown experimentally on an extreme, dry stand at Troubsko (Czech Republic) from 1984-1990. The plant originates in North America, in humid stands, and has been tested in some European countries with good results, especially on the territory of the former USSR. The experiment started with autumn sowing. For the first year, the stand consisted only of leaf rosettes. From the second year, the harvest was taken in 1-2 cuttings during vegetative growth. Green mass yields reached from 60 to 95 tons per ha. The experiment was to determine efficiency of Silphium perfoliatum L., the chemical composition in the different developmental phases, its growth dynamics and the morphological state of the plant as related with fodder plant properties. In 1990 the stand was left to seed, the yield being 500 kg per ha. Results show that under the conditions of the Czech Republic, Silphium perfoliatum L. appears to be a good quality, good-yielding and vital fodder plant, sufficiently adaptable to the stand
