Basic characteristics of three systems for the immunochemical detection of salmonella

Systems for the immunochemical detection of salmonella, namely, VIDAS Salmonella (Bio-Merieux, France), Locate Salmonella Screening Test (Rhone-Poulenc, UK) and Salmonella-Tek (Organon Teknika, Belgium) were tested with defined cultures of salmonella (Salmonella enteritidis, S.typhimurium, S. adelaide) and related non-salmonella strains (Citrobacter spp., Enterobacter spp. and others). Rapid (1-2 h) detection of all salmonella strains involved was achieved. Minimal labour was required to use the VIDAS system. The detection limit of all three methods was 10 *[6) CFU per ml. Each of the systems produced false positive results with some related non-salmonella strains
