The study of cereal genetic resources at the Research Institute of Cereals (VUO) at Kromeriz (Czech Republic) started in 1952. The world collection by December 31 1991 contained 12,230 genotypes, 671 of them of domestic origin. The study of the basic cereal species - i.e. wheat, barley, rye and oats - is based on a philosophy similar to that behind the study of other plant species. Concrete study methodologies are similar as well; however there do exist some differences in solving techniques, in the order of priorities, and in the unfinished state of tasks regarding some of the crops.
