Influence of floral honeys on sanitary status of overwintering honeybee colonies

The effect of wintering of colonies on flower honeys upon the symptoms of dysentery and nosematosis were evaluated in three successive years. Honey from rape (Brassica napus L. convar. Napus) and sunflower (Helianthus annus) was used for winter supply. The colonies in the control group wintered on invert prepared by processing a concentrated solution of beet sugar with water in proportion 3:2. No special anti-nosematic was used beside the common hygienic measures to dampen nosematosis; the colonies were treated for varroasis with the preparation Avarin 01 B-90 (effective substance amitraz) after the supplies were completed. No symptoms of dysentery in bees were found. There were no significant differences in nosematosis attack between colonies wintering on flower honeys and on invert. The best state was noticed in colonies wintering only on sunflower honey from the summer honey flow. The bees got over the winter period from October to March during which they stayed in hives 146 days without any symptoms of dysentery or nosematosis. They developed well after the cleaning flight in spring, without a visible decrease in number of bees. Wintering of bee colonies on flower honey is possible also in extreme climatic conditions at an elevation above sea level of 700 m. However, it is necessary to use high-quality flower honey, to keep good health in colonies and to ensure necessary rest until the cleaning flight in spring
