Phenotype correlations between quality traits of eggs of gene reserve in Japanese quail

Phenotype correlations of various traits of egg quality of gene reserve in Japanese quail (GRJQ) were evaluated in our experimental flock. The egg weight correlated significantly positively with the yolk weight, egg-white weight and shell weight, and significantly negatively with the concentration of cholesterol in yolk and in the edible part. Further weight parameters of egg correlated significantly negatively with the cholesterol level in yolk, namely yolk weight (-0.3239), egg-white (-0.1630) and shell weight (-0.2929). From these results it can be concluded that yolk cholesterol was diluted in larger eggs. In the phenotype manifestation of a physiological trait as complicated as the concentration of yolk cholesterol there will probably be a complicated combination of layer genotype with its momentary physiological state which is influenced mainly by age (laying cycle). The concentration of yolk cholesterol correlated insignificantly negatively with the index of egg shape, significantly negatively with the proportion of yolk and significantly positively with the cholesterol in the edible part. All correlations were positive and highly significant, ranging from 0.63 to 0.73 as far as the relations of weight traits of egg components mutually are concerned (weights of yolk, egg-white and shell). If we analyse the relations between other traits it is worth mentioning the positive correlation between the index of egg-white refraction and egg-white weight, significantly negative correlation between the index of egg-white refraction and egg shape index as well as the content of cholesterol in edible part. The index of yolk refraction did not correlate significantly with any of the traits and so cannot be used in selection for concentration of yolk cholesterol
