The paper analyzes the recent transformation of Venezuelan agriculture within the framework of the macroeconomic adjustments implemented since the early eighties. The improvement of performance of Venezuelan agriculture cannot take place unless there is economic stability and adequate macroeconomic policies are undertaken. There is a need to continue market-oriented reforms to gain from trade based on comparative advantages. Reformers must be aware of costs associated with the transition period
