Changes in occurrence of threatened and local butterflies in the Piestany surroundings (western Slovakia), 1978-1995

Butterflies (Papilionoidea and Hesperiidae) were recorded in the Piestany (Slovakia) area, the surrounding alluvial plain of the river Vah and part of the Povazsky Inovec mountain range (162-650 m elev.) from 1990-1995. Results were compared with data obtained in 1978-1989 from literature and butterfly collectors. In total, 24 threatened and/or local butterfly species were found in 1990-1995 (threatened - 17, threatened and local - 6, local - 1). Hipparchia semele, Chazara brizeis and Maculinea arion had previously been found in this area (1978 - 1985, 1978 - 1984, 1978 - 1983, respectively), but were not found in 1990 - 1995. Four species (Pyrgus armoricanus, Colias erate, Brenthis daphne and Plebejus idas) recorded in the study period were not found in the territory until 1990. Compared with data preceding 1990, the distribution of Pyrgus serratulae, Zerynthia polyxena, Colias myrmidone and Satyrium walbum did not change greatly but their abundance in 1990 - 1995 was lower. Melitaea phoebe abundance fluctuated. The abundance of the other threatened or local species was stable during 1978 -1995. Some biotopes of the territory were recently partly changed (reforestation of some xerothermic places, overgrown with invasive woody plans, burned vegetation, etc.) but many habitats of threatened and local butterflies have remained virtually unchanged since 1978
