Structure of the natural hardwood floodplain forest in the National Reserve Lyon

Structure of the natural hardwood floodplain forest in the National Nature Reserve Lyon and in the cadaster of Cicov (Slovakia) was studied by classical dendrometrical and dendrological inventory of both trees and shrub layers. Old growth origin is natural and it is probable that the greatest part of the forest comes from spontaneous regeneration after the disastrous flood of 1899. In the tree layer, domestic tree species typical of the hardwood floodplain forest ecosystems prevail; no species dominates, while Quercus robur L., Fraxinus angustifolia Vahl, Populus nigra L., P. alba L., Ulmus laevis Pall. and Salix alba L. are mixed almost regularly in the area of the research plot. Approximately 80 percent of trees have damaged crowns (partially dry, dry tops etc.); individuals of Fraxinus angustifolia Vahl and Ulmus laevis Pall are in the best health. Vigorous shrub layer is of high biodiversity; typical shrub species do not hinder the natural regeneration of Fraxinus angustifolia Vahl which forms a very promising part of the ecosystem. Ash regeneration under old trees was also studied. Beginning of the tree layer destruction is obvious and this probably causes excellent conditions for ash regeneration
