Orthoptera species and assemblages in the main habitat types of some urban areas in the Carpathian Basin

Orthoptera fauna and grasshopper assemblages of the main habitat types of the Budapest city area (Hungary) were compared. The relative richness of the Orthoptera fauna in the green belt of the city is mainly due to the contact of two markedly different biogeographical units: the hills of Buda and the sandy plain of the Pest side. The Orthoptera fauna of the natural/seminatural green belt (78 spp.) of the garden belt (31 spp.) and of the parks and cemeteries (33 spp.) have shown important species complexes, while the number of detectable species in the city quarters (6 spp.) was very low and mainly accidental. According to a partial comparison, the suburbs of the town of Zvolen (Slovakia) are characterised by lack of "southern" Orthoptera species compared to the suburban area of the town of Kecskemet and to Budapest
