Damage to maize stems and cobs caused by the European corn border (Ostrinia nubilalis Hbn.)
1998
Cagan, L. (Slovenska Polnohospodarska Univ., Nitra (Slovak Republic))
From 1989-1992 damage caused by the European corn borer (ECB) larvae to maize plants was observed in southwestern Slovakia. The first damage was usually found in the upper internodia of the plants. Larval entrance holes were found at a higher position at the first date of observation compared to the second and the third dates (one week later or in autumn). The highest amount of larval entrance holes was found at internodia 7, 8 and 9. The plants sowed in a regular time were damaged on a lower internodium than the plants sowed later. In the hot and dry summer of 1990 the larvae found for their entrance more moist lower parts of the maize plants. The earlier hybrids usually had damage in a higher position than the later hybrids. More damage was found in the plants sowed at a regular time than in the plants sowed later. In the distribution of damage, there was usually a significant correlation coefficient between hybrids as well as between years
