Occurrence of bustard (Otis tarda) in Slovakia and other European countries is described. Information on the development in the number of bustards during last hundred years in our territory is presented. The aim of contribution is to attract attention to biology, anthropic and ecological causes of a critical decrease in its numbers and precautions for protection of this endangered species (bustard diseases, breeding-protective and veterinary activities)
