Czech Red Cattle - an endangered genetic line

The breeding history of Czech Red Cattle is described. This race was the original cattle raised in Bohemia and is now included among gene reserves. The milk productivity of these cows at the beginning of the 19th century was 1000-1700 kg of milk. During the 19th century the breed was crossed with other races, and since the beginning of the 20th century with Simental cattle. Due to this the Czech Red Cattle has nearly become extinct. Milk productivity in the 1920's was 2500 kg yearly and buttermilk content 3.4-3.6 %, while in the seventies it was 2900 kg and 3.8 %, respectively. A project for increasing the number of Czech Red Cattle by crossing the Czech Spotted cows with the bulls of Czech Red Cattle and reintroducing this original race into the mountain areas of Sumava is also described. Data on genotype frequency in the polymorph variants of milk and blood proteins are presented
