Studies on efficacy of certain preemergence herbicides in asparagus (Asparagus officinalis) L. were conducted during 1989 to 1992 under field conditions in Rayong province and under greenhouse conditions in Bangkok. The results showed that the herbicides which gave a good control of weeds and without detrimental effect on asparagus yield were either metribuzin at 1.0 kg/ha, pendimethalin at 1.5 kg/ha, or the combination of those at 0.5 + 0.75 kg/ha, respectively. Diuron at 1.0 kg/ha was also good enough for use in transplanted crop but not in the established crop or that injury might occur if the chemical was routinely used. In the greenhouse experiments, metribuzin alone and metribuzin tank - mixed with pendimethalin resulted in a good control of Eleusine indica (L.) Gaertn., Digitaria adscendens (H.B.K.) Henr., Dactyloctenium aegyptium (L.) P.B., Amaranthus viridis L. and Portulaca oleracea L. when applied preemergence or postemergence at 3-and 5-leaf stages. Pendimethalin alone did not provide a good control of the weeds at 5-leaf stage.
