Varietal difference in yield and amino acid composition of mulberry leaves to silkworm (Bombyx mori L.) rearing

Growth performance, leaf yield and food value were studied in 8 mulberry varieties; Noi, Khun Pi, Kanva -2, BR.4, BR.10, BR.51, BR.60 and NM.60. Leaf yield collected at middle cutting, first shoot cutting and second shoot cutting, BR.60, BR.51 and NM.60 gave the highest total leaf yield, i.e., 3,596, 3,519 and 3,405 kg/rai, respectively. Noi and Kanva -2 gave the lowest leaf yield of 2,263 and 2,158 kg/rai. There was significantly positive correlation between leaf yield with leaf weight and leaf percentage. Heritability of leaf yield from harvesting by middle cutting, 1st shoot cutting, 2nd shoot cutting and total leaf yield were 0.71, 0.94, 0.35 and 0.91, respectively. Heritability of leaf weight and leaf percentage were 0.97 and 0.90, respectively. Favorable mulberry varieties for young silkworm are BR.4, BR.51 and BR.60. For mature silkworm are BR.10, BR.51, NM.60 and Noi. The two varietal BR.60-NM.60 feeding gave the highest cocoon yield. Analysis of amino acid composition of 6 mulberry varieties which were favorable for young and mature silkworm feeding, BR.4 had highest average of total amino acids of both young and old leaves (in 100 gm, of dry weight) equal 20.19 gm., followed by BR.10, Noi, BR.51, NM.60 and BR.60, i.e., 17.26, 15.17, 12.71, 11.85 and 11.19 gm, respectively. Requirements for growth of silkworm were found to be not only these amino acids as one factor but also moisture content of leaf, other food values, physical and botanical characteristics of leaf.
