Yield and some agronomic characteristics of edible canna (Canna edulis Ker.) as affected by varieties, planting dates, fertilizer rates and plant densities

Trials on appropriate production technology of edible canna including varieties, planting dates, plant populations, fertilizer rates, storage techniques of planting material and leaf area estimate were carried out at National Corn and Sorghum Research Center during May, 1992 to April, 1993. Varieties Thai green and Japanese green were superior to Thai purple on numbers of leaf, new shoot and rhizome weight per plant. At harvest (8 - month stage) variety Japanese green produced the highest rhizome weight but an above ground plant fresh weight of three varieties was not different. Rhizome starch content of variety Japanese green was higher than those of Thai green and Thai purple. An above ground plant fresh weight from 180 - day harvesting produced an acceptable quality for rough feed. May planting produced greater plant and rhizome fresh weight than those of June and July. This study suggested a tendency that edible canna was a short - day plant. When the cost of planting was taken into consideration, the 100 * 100 centimeter spacing was suggested eventhough the 75 * 100 centimeter spacing produced the highest plant and rhizome fresh weight. An appropriate application rate of the 15-15-15 fertilizer was 75 kilograms per rai. The practical and effective storage technique of planting material was to put rhizome with 65-70 percent moisture content in the sealed garbage bag and left it indoor. With Two - month storage duration this rhizome still maintained a high germination ability of 80 percentage. The regression coefficient for leaf area estimation were 0.703 for varieties Thai green and Thai purple and 0.704 for Japanese green.
