Maize population KK-DR(S)C3F2 was planted in downy mildew disease nursery at NSW FCRC in 1989 early rainy season. 500 resistant plants were self-pollinated. At harvest, 269 selected S1 ears were harvested and shelled separately. The progenies were tested for yield potential and agronomic performance under stress and normal condition at NSW FCRC in 1990 dry and early rainy season respectively. Mean grain yield of the 269 S1 progenies tested under stress and nonstress condition were 142 and 454 kg/rai respectively with the average drought index of 1.02 and the average ASI of the progenies were 4.3 days. 86 S1 progenies were selected base on drought index., ASI and number of ear per plant. In 1991 dry season the 86 S1 progenies were recombined into maize population KK-DR(S)C4 or NSP904. Ten highest drought index out of the 86 progenies were selected and recombined into the experimental variety (EV1). The other 2 experimental varieties EV2 and EV3 were developed by the recombination of 9 and 13 S1 progenies selected base on visual selection under stress condition. The maize population and varieties will be tested for yield and agronomic performance in 1991 late rainy season and 1992 early rainy season.
