Dry matter and protein degradation of Stylosanthes hamata cv. verano and Alysicarpus vaginalis in rumen

Ruminal degradation of dry matter (DM) and protein (or nitrogen, N) in Stylosanthes hamata cv. Verano (VS) and Alysicarpus vaginalis (AV) harvested at 45 and 75 days after germination and Leucaena leucocephala leaves and tops (LL), as acomparision, were studied by using the nylon bag technique. Nylonbags containing forage samples were incubated in the rumen of three rumen fistulated steers for various periods and the bagresidues were analysed and determined for the degradability. The DM degradation expressed as effective rumen degradability (ED) inboth VS and AV were similar and significantly higher than thosecutting at 75 days and LL (average 52.9 % vs 39.1 %). The protein degradation expressed as ruminal degradable nitrogen (RDN) were also high in VS and AV cutting at 45 days (16.9 and 19.9 gN/kgDM, respectively). These values were exceeded the N requirement of the microbes in the rumen. In the VS and AV cutting at 75 days, the RDN values were dropped to 8.9 and 10.5 gN/kgDM, respectively which were only marginal lower than the microbial requirement. For LL, although it contained high protein content, the RDN was only 11.6 gN/kgDM. However, this value was still exceeded the N microbial requirement as the degradation of DM in LL was low. As a source of protein, LL exhibited supperior value as it was not only able to supply RDN in excess the microbial requirement, it also supplied the higher quantity of digestible undegradable protein than those of VS and AV (14.3 % vs 8.1-4.9 %).
