Use of tow stem-nodulating legumes as green manure for rice in saline soils

The main problem of salt affected soil in Northeast Thailand is high loss of organic matter resulted in low soil fertility. Generally, land use of the slightly and moderately saline soil are for rice cultivation, but grain yields are low. The study on utilization of two stem-nodulating legumes namely Sesbania rostrata and Aeschynomene afraspera as green manure was conducted at Ban Thabo Roi-et Province in 1990/91. The objectives were to compare growth, biomass and N-accumulation between both species with and without PK fertilizer. At the age of 60 days, they were incorporation as green manure for succeeding rice. Rice variety of KDML 105 was transplanted with and without N fertilizer. The results showed that S. rostrata gave higher biomass than A. afraspera of 16.605 and 7.558 t/ha, respectively. Application of PK increase biomass of both species. Although S. rostrata with PK showed the highest biomass of 31.131 t/ha and higher N-accumulation of 90.43 kg N/ha compared to those of A. afraspera. The differences in rice yields of both species of green manure was not found. The use of PK to legumes tended to increase rice yield when compare to those without PK but they are not significantly different. Green manuring with N fertilizer for rice also tended to increase rice yield not significantly different compared to the treatment of green manure without N.
