[Aflatoxin and selection in groundnut]

Groundnut kernels and locally roasted groundnuts. Roasted pods were splitted open, then seed coat, cotyledon, and embryo were collected separately. Aflatoxin levels in different parts were determined using Velasco Aflatoxin meter. Data obtained indicated that, although moisture contents were generally low (10.36-14.56 %), colonization of A. flavus on different parts of the kernels varied greatly ranging from 7.0-46.4 %. From aflatoxin content determination, it was quite clear that most of the toxin was accumulated in the embryo (274 ppb) and in ground cotyledon (275 ppb). Tested for aflatoxin contamination. Most of the lines tested were found resistance having aflatoxin content of less than 20 ppb. Screening of groundnut lines for A. flavus resistance identified several lines with good degree of resistance. The test also showed that growing groundnut in infested soil would be a more appropriate screening technique for A. flavus resistance then dry seed inoculation.
